Karjalainen enhanced its digital presence with the Bold CMS system

Karjalainen started the Bold system installation work in the fall of 2020, and the actual rollout took place at the beginning of 2021. Technological development manager Arttu Romo explains that the decision to change the content management system was prompted by the need to update the old system, which no longer met the delivery's needs.

"We decided to change the content management system in 2019 when the old system became inefficient and too complicated. We initially worked out the requirements criteria together with the delivery and the workgroup, after which we started looking for a new system worldwide," says Romo. He went through about 10 different providers, through interviews and in the form of demos. Still, in the end, Bold stood out from the crowd with its visual editor, which in its simplicity was as if it was made with journalists' hectic everyday needs in mind.

Bold's visual editor won over the editors

Romo says that Bold's editor was one of the deciding factors in the selection. "At Bold, we really like Bold's editor, where you can visually see and plan the story during implementation," he says. Editors also liked Bold's ease of use, and Romo emphasises that transitioning to the Bold world from the old content management system was effortless.

Digi first process and satisfied readers

With the introduction of Bold, Karjalainen moved more strongly to the "digital first" process, where stories are planned before the content and folded online. The print version will be made later and better. Readers have been satisfied with the change, and the magazine has received positive feedback, especially for its speed.

"The Bold Editor allows us to see and design the article during implementation. The pages are also considered easy to use, and this year, we have reached record numbers of visitors and digital-only subscribers as a result. "

Simple editor, versatile tool

One of Bold's strengths is that its editor always remains the same, but the story can live according to the editor. For journalists, this means the opportunity to break stories in real time without guessing what the result might look like. "The trick is that the editor is always the same, but the story can look like anything. The preview always shows the final result with advertising spots, so it is extremely easy for the editor to use the preview to quickly modify the story's structure and move elements from one place to another.", Romo points out.

Bold’s possibilities and prospects

Bold's CMS enables versatile content production and enables the creation of versatile content, which is an essential part of our digital strategy to reach younger readers. Romo says that at the end of 2023, the magazine had more than 8,000 digital-only readers. "When you have a headless CMS, any front-end technology can be integrated into it, and content can easily be run on any terminal," sums up Romo.

Karjalainen is satisfied with the possibilities offered by Bold, and Romo emphasises that the system's development wishes have been taken into account along the way and Karjalainen has been able to participate in the development of the product. Karjalainen's story shows how an efficient and user-friendly CMS system can significantly improve the quality and effectiveness of publishing.
